Bulgaria is seeking enhanced support from NATO allies to bolster its defenses in the Black Sea region, following an uptick in attacks on commercial vessels, according to Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov. On October 16, Stoyanov revealed that Bulgaria has formally requested assistance from NATO, including aviation support, air-defense missile systems, anti-drone technology, and maritime patrol aircraft, to address the escalating threat.
The request underscores Bulgaria’s concern over the growing intensity of strikes in the Black Sea, which Stoyanov argues highlights the urgent need to improve regional security and modernize the country’s armed forces. He pointed out that other NATO members, such as Romania and the Baltic states, also require additional defense capabilities to ensure their security.
Recent incidents involving four merchant ships being hit within Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone, alongside two others targeted in Romanian territorial waters, have heightened worries about the safety of commercial shipping and the broader regional security landscape. These attacks have prompted a call for stronger cooperation among NATO allies to safeguard maritime infrastructure and shipping routes.
While Bulgarian authorities have yet to officially identify those responsible for the attacks, they have stated that more evidence is needed before attributing responsibility. The government is actively assessing the situation as it works towards enhancing collaborative defense efforts with NATO partners.
