The national weather authorities have issued extended orange heat warnings, predicting mercury levels to rise to 42 degrees in Madrid and parts of southern Spain. The most severe heat is anticipated in the inland areas of Andalusia, where highs could reach 42 to 43 degrees.
Córdoba and Sevilla are expected to be among the most affected regions. In Córdoba, temperatures are predicted to hit approximately 43 degrees on Thursday, with values remaining near 40 degrees on Friday. The province is under a yellow heat warning, with the unusually high temperatures likely to persist into early next week. Similarly, Sevilla’s Campiña Sevillana area is under an orange warning, with forecasts indicating temperatures could climb to 41 degrees by the afternoon and evening.
The scorching heat is not confined to just a few areas; it is expected to spread across Spain. Regions including Badajoz, Cáceres, Córdoba, Sevilla, Granada, Jaén, Zaragoza, Lleida, Logroño, and Toledo could experience temperatures reaching 40 degrees or higher. Meanwhile, much of mainland Spain is likely to record temperatures exceeding 34 degrees, and Mallorca may see highs over 35 degrees. The warm conditions are forecast to extend into the nights in parts of southern Spain, the Mediterranean coast, the Balearic Islands, and the Canary Islands, with minimum temperatures around 25 degrees in certain locations.
This extreme heat is attributed to a very warm air mass hovering over mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, which is also heightening the risk of wildfires, with some areas facing potentially extreme fire danger. While a slight drop in temperatures may occur in some regions after Friday, the unusually high temperatures are expected to prevail through the weekend. In contrast, northern coastal areas are predicted to remain significantly cooler, with temperatures mostly in the mid-20s.
