India and the European Union have taken a significant step towards finalizing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) they have long pursued, with plans to seal the deal by the year’s end. This development emerged from a trilateral meeting involving India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, European Council President António Costa, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during the G7 Summit in Evian, France. The leaders announced that the agreement would encompass a wide range of areas, including goods, services, digital trade, investment, and technology cooperation, positioning it as one of the largest proposed trade agreements globally.
Should the FTA come to fruition, it will create a substantial free trade zone connecting nearly two billion people and representing about a quarter of the world’s economic output. Beyond trade, both parties are looking to strengthen collaborations in defense, connectivity, and strategic infrastructure projects, notably through initiatives like the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor. The negotiations have advanced swiftly since being concluded earlier in the year, with current efforts concentrated on ironing out legal and technical specifics before the official signing.
European leaders have framed the agreement as a milestone that could enhance economic integration between India and Europe, especially as global supply chains undergo significant changes. Prime Minister Modi underscored the agreement’s potential to foster stability and inclusive growth through fortified India-EU relations. Meanwhile, European officials emphasized the strategic significance of their partnership, particularly in navigating global economic and geopolitical challenges.
During their discussions, the leaders also examined broader trade and investment cooperation and exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest. The momentum for the FTA remains strong, with both sides committed to maintaining high-level engagements in the coming months as they work towards the anticipated signing. The agreement promises to be a landmark framework, reflecting a deepening of ties between India and the European Union.
