The Russian Federation has called back its ambassador to the United Kingdom, Andrey Kelin, concluding his seven-year tenure in the position. This development occurs as the diplomatic relationship between Moscow and London continues to strain, largely due to Britain’s support for Ukraine amid ongoing conflict. Kelin’s diplomatic mission officially ended on July 21, according to the Russian embassy, which has yet to announce a successor. In the interim, Vasily A. Tsyganov, the embassy’s chargé d’affaires, assumes the role of the senior Russian diplomat presently stationed in the UK.
This diplomatic shift coincides with escalating tensions driven by the UK’s military assistance to Ukraine. Russia has recently issued warnings of potential “consequences” for Britain following reports that attack drones manufactured in the UK are being provided to Ukraine. These drones are reportedly being utilized in operations against targets within Russian territory, further inflaming the situation between the two nations.
The Kremlin has voiced criticisms of what it perceives as a confrontational stance by London.
