In a recent legal development, a court in New Mexico has mandated that Meta inject $567 million into a specific fund designed to tackle the alleged mental health impacts on children due to its social media offerings. This decision builds on a jury’s findings from March, which concluded that Meta was aware of the detrimental effects on children’s mental well-being and did not take adequate measures to combat child sexual exploitation on its platforms. With this new court order, Meta’s total financial responsibility in the proceedings has now escalated to $942 million.
The allocation of the $567 million involves $420 million earmarked for mental health treatment services aimed at young individuals in New Mexico. The remaining portion of the funds is set to facilitate prevention and awareness initiatives, screening services, and other related efforts over a projected five-year period. Additionally, the court has instructed Meta to enhance the safety measures for children on its social media giants, Facebook and Instagram. This includes refining age-verification systems, offering more transparent information regarding safety and privacy functionalities, and formulating strategies to identify users potentially under the age of 13.
Furthermore, Meta is tasked with collaborating with educational institutions or child-safety organizations to establish a system for reporting accounts suspected of being operated by users under the age of 13. The company must also purge personal data acquired from these underage users and is required to submit biannual progress reports detailing its adherence to the court’s directives. Although the court refrained from mandating a statewide age verification system solely for New Mexico, citing fairness concerns and existing federal child privacy protections, the pressure on Meta continues to intensify.
In response to these legal challenges, Meta has expressed its dissatisfaction with the court’s ruling and announced plans to appeal the decision. The company insists that it is committed to safeguarding its users and has already implemented measures to mitigate harmful content and address online safety issues. This case adds to the mounting legal scrutiny Meta faces over allegations that its platforms could negatively affect young users, with similar legal actions unfolding in other states across the United States.
