Netflix’s thriller, “The Whisper Man,” delves into the chilling world of serial killers as a father and son find themselves embroiled in a harrowing investigation following the disappearance of a child. Adam Scott stars as Tom Kennedy, a crime novelist and widower, who returns to his hometown with his son, Jake, just as a string of child abductions begins. These disappearances echo the modus operandi of an infamous killer now behind bars.
Tom’s estranged father, Pete, portrayed by Robert De Niro, is a retired detective who once played a crucial role in apprehending the jailed murderer. Pete is reluctantly drawn back into the dark past he hoped to leave behind when his grandson, Jake, goes missing. Michelle Monaghan plays Detective Amanda, who joins the investigation team as they strive to unravel the mystery and find the missing child.
Adapted from Alex North’s 2019 novel, the film incorporates classic thriller elements such as missing children, enigmatic serial killers, and cryptic clues, all wrapped in psychological tension. However, despite these promising components, the film’s narrative falters with a predictable plot and standard twists that fail to deliver substantial suspense.
De Niro’s portrayal of Pete comes across as subdued and somewhat detached, while Scott’s performance struggles to convincingly convey Tom’s emotional struggles. The film’s impact is further diminished by its dark visual tones and inconsistent pacing, which hinder the overall tension.
In an attempt to heighten the drama, the film’s climax is filled with confrontations and revelations, yet these scenes lack the thrill needed to captivate audiences fully. The conclusion leaves much to be desired, offering little in the way of a fulfilling resolution. Ultimately, “The Whisper Man” presents a familiar narrative within the serial-killer genre but fails to set itself apart from its many predecessors.
